WHAT IS SOUL MUSIC
Soul Music’s origins trace back to the harrowing journey of enslaved Africans, who brought with them rich musical traditions. These spirituals and work songs, born out of suffering and hope, laid the foundation for gospel music. As African Americans sought freedom and equality, soul music emerged in the 1950ls and 1960’s blending gospel, rhythm and blues and jazz. Icons like Mahalia Jackson, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Aretha Franklin gave voice to the struggles and triumphs of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, soul music continues to evolve, influencing contemporary music genres,
while preserving its powerful legacy of resilience and expression.
